How informative, that comment changed my whole outlook because of it's succinct and fair nature.

I haven't had time to research this. But I am pretty sure that paying a royalty for songs was introduced with internet radio.
1. No, they've always been there. 2. Usenet is bad. Or rather, torrents are better. Spoken like someone who has no idea. Torrents are cheaper, but that's where the "better" part ends.

However, I'd be delighted to be proven wrong and find out that torrents aren't the best source for lossless music.

It seems like torrents contain more rare files, they are easier to use and it's rare to find a malicious file.
On the other hand newsgroups are considerably faster, and anonymous. Which is a very big deal.

I win.

radios pay royalties when they play a song, i believe
which is why podcasts of morning shows remove the songs used in the original broadcast. (or at least the one i listen to does.)

I wanna play.
I personally obtain data of intrest from torrents. I use a private tracker that you have to be invited to. In my experience it is super fast. However, it only has NEW stuff. So, I can download every album that was released this month at the speed that is only limited by my cable company. However, if I want an older collection of data, I would have to go outside of this tracker to obtain it. In this case, Usenet would be a much better place to get it at good speeds - IMO - as always. I've been downloading for ages now and have more crap that I'll ever, EVA use. I think I was actually addicted to downloading for a while. I use to download stuff just because I thought maybe somebody else might need it at one point. Years and years ago I use to have to get all my stuff from private FTP servers - that was always fun. Had to keep the ratio though - not as fun.

Oh yes the good old days of private FTP servers and efnets #warez2share.
That was the best place to find everything in the late 90s. It had no advertsing, no ratios, ask and you shall receive policy. If you needed something, you just went in and asked and someone pm'd you with FTP details. They were all so kind.
