The company I work for (Fishbowl Inventory) is in desperate need of a technical writer. Currently we have an employees wife doing it, but we really need someone in house you can learn the software and needs of the customers. They need to be able to learn basic html/css (very basic).
My question is... Where do I find people who want to be technical writers? Are there even people out there that wish this?
The company is in Orem, Utah and the Managers perfer to find people through networking instead of posting on techy job sites.
Any help?

Technical writing skills are a huge pet peeve of mine. I am talking about the messed up direction when you put something together. These people get paid big bucks to skip simple steps. Its simply amazing to see some of this "technical writing" skills of the profession.

I'm not sure if he'd be interested but I know that Mactombs has a lot of writing experience and he's also currently works in the tech industry... Ping him and see if it would be something he's interested in.

Technical writers create documentation for a technology. Their responsibility, like graphic designers', is to effectively communicate a message. Technical writers are responsible for writing text that is helpful to its intended audience, accurate, readable, and accessible. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technical_writerBasically a translator. Someone who understands 'tech' and can translate into basic English.

I applied for a job as a technical writer once and got it. But I didn't think I'd enjoy it, so I didn't accept the offer.

I knew a technical writer once, but he was overqualified for any job he might get actually technically writing.
The thing with technical writing is, once the manual's finished, there's not so much job security.
Post more of the job details -- especially if this is more of a short-term thing, hourly, etc.
It is the kind of thing I would be interested in, but may be currently over-paid to be too interested in. Actually, I know an English major (graduated) who's looking for a job and might be good for this kind of thing, so definitely get back with some details.

Here are the details: There are 2 main parts of the job 1) Rewriting the manual. The manual needs a complete over haul. It was written for version 2.2 and has been slowly updated by completely under qualified people. We are now at version 4.7 and need to scrap the crap and start over. 2) Writing content for the website. Currently we have a web version of the manual up, but we also need a bit more of a marketing approach to a lot of the key features.
We do a release about 4 times a year, and we did want someone in-house so they can really get to know the software. We think we could keep a full time salary person completely busy for about 2 years. That is just the plans right now, I am sure more stuff would come up before that was up.
Major benefits of the work place though. Very fun environment. Do to high sales last year, the company is treating everyone to a cruise in May. Paid lunches every month. Parties a couple times a year. Last year we had 17 employees (Dev, Testing, Support, Sales) This year we have over 30 employees and have openings.

Sounds better all the time. Send me a message for who to contact. As temping as it is personally, I know someone else who might be better qualified and who is also actively looking.
