It's time for a new public OPG server.  Vote now!

I love the bias in the question.
In theory if this wins and I want to be an ass, we don't have to do anything but get rid of a plugin from SM.
BAM! Server with better reg for the same cost.

Other than that. Where's the specifics? Who's the provider? Where's the new server going to be? What bandwidth is behind it? What's the cost? What's the FPS? Are we willing to lose our IP? Will we lose our IP? If it moves west coast, will we lose our east coast patrons?

As much as I love the peachy tagline for the vote, this isn't something to be taken lightly.

Well like I said some where else the senate has the final say.  Regardless of this vote.

I just crunched some numbers for the easiest, least problematic switch.

If we went from an NFo Denver to an NFo Premium 2000fps in LA the difference in price (for us) would be as follows:

Current Price for our NFo server = 93.37/month
Current Price for our HiDef private = 82.00/month
Total = 175.37

Price of Premium LA with same setup w/ 2000fps versus 500 = 121.97

Difference in price between the two = 28.6

If members are willing to pay for the difference (we've barely been making our current costs), then I'd say this is a great idea. Other than that, I would not like to move away from NFo right now as we launch the new site, are prepping for elections, and are in the middle of the 3v3.

A ton is changing at oPg right now, we have serious potential for growth. I'd rather:
  • Stick with our current setup
  • Move to the LA Premium if someone wants to pay dif\
  • Wait to see how things turn out, providing we have enough backing, colocate for $300/month and run up to 7 servers

Other than that, I see switching our IP as a potentially serious problem right now. With all of our other expansion going on, killing our base could lead to an overall collapse.

Also keep in mind 2000fps versus 500fps will not net you any noticeable difference other than a placebo effect on a public server. If you claim to be able to consciously notice a difference of something far less than second, you are suffering from the placebo effect.

Edit: http://opggaming.com/forums/index.php/topic,3987.0.html that is the original discussion from months ago.

If you play on there cpl la | nfo cal rotation | 100 tic (2000fps premium package).  You notice the difference but this is there server so they probably give it special treatment.

Yes, I have. They have improved them they are now on 2000fps as well.  According to there site.  The one thing I notice about there servers with the 2000fps is the choke.  In there old dming servers the choke was rediciously high now it is alot lower.

Anytime someone volunteers to "cover the cost" I cringe.  I fully trust that you sirs will donate the amount mentioned.  But do you plan to add that amount in addition to your already generous donation?  Or is it possible that when times get tough you will just ear mark your donation to "cover the cost" while the rest of the community has to cough up $30 extra?

Please do not take that personally.  This possibility does need to be addressed since we're already struggling.

The reason I put the disclaimer of for a period of 12 months (or less if the contract is less initially) is to address your point of commitment.

thx,

I'll write up why that is later this week in a tech article I'm planning for the main page.

2000fps or 1000fps (They're the same bloody thing, which most people fail to realize. 2000fps just tends to be run through windows, whereas 1000fps comes through linux/centos. Cry me a river about the .01ms difference.) will slightly help w/ reg and slightly reduce choke. You need to consider which is better: 2000fps on windows isn't hard to do, and often times it is worse than a linux/centos setup because the linux/centos kernel has been rebuilt with CS in mind.

In regards to NFo, the general consensus these days is that most their pub servers are decent, but they take better care of the 2000fps ones. Granted, that is based off hearsay and speculation, so take it with a grain of salt.

Regardless of what we go with, there will always be a ton of 'THIS SERVER SUCKS!' just because alot of people like to blame their poor performance on the server. Get enough of that going around, with the combined ups/downs of GSPs and you end up with a 'crappy' server.

Especially pacific CAL.  I heard that enhanced team made playoffs.  If they can, pacific must be bad.
