Norm, don't you know Apple's OSX is just a version of linux with a more fancy UI and better development tools?
Actually OSX is based on the BSD kernel, not linux. But this is just the kernel. You're kind of implying that OSX is another *nix O/S which isn't really accurate.
But that isn't really my criticism of apple, a company I have bought computers from since my Apple //c back in the 80s. Currently Apple has put all of their money into branding campaigns. They overcharge for their computer hardware to make sheik stuff. In terms of computing power to dollar ratio, PCs are still the best. And of course, software limitations with apple and *nix boxes are a major reason not to go that route. With the direction apple has gone I doubt if I'll buy one again.
There are a few good reasons to buy Mac of course. If you are uncomfortable with Windows and/or are more comfortable with OSX then perhaps it is worth the extra money. This is the main reason I have so many Macs, because my girlfriend grew up on Macs and doesn't buy anything else.
Another reason is sound engineering. Since the hardware is more integrated than on a PC there is less electrical noise which some engineers are anal about -- although honestly I think this is a silly reason.
Invalid reasons for buying a Mac include, "they don't get viruses like PCs" (that's because they don't take up a large enough share of the computer market to make viruses viable), or my favorite "because I do a lot of graphic design". While Adobe geared their products towards Apple in the 1990s, with the growth of Windows from 95 onward, Adobe now gears their software with windows in my first.
Adobe has come out and said that their software runs quicker and more efficiently in Windows than on Mac.
