I finally set up a dual boot between Ubuntu and Windows on my lappy.

So far I'm loving Ubuntu. I dunno how much I'll use it for work and I def won't be using it for games, but for everything else it seems decent.
I'll jump ship on the work part as soon as I get used enough to the m$ office replacement.

I may have to take you up on that.

Is there anywhere I can go to find a decent introduction to the finer points of ubuntu? I'm pretty familiar with the console, but I've never used it with a head before.

This is a guide for a previous release but many of the steps will work with all versions of Ubuntu.

besides that just the groups on the ubuntu site themselves.

I used to dual boot between ubuntu and windows.  I finally got rid of the linux partition because I didn't use it enough.  It is certainly more powerful as an operating system, but with the power came lots of inconveniences (like spending 2 hours setting up my TV as a 2nd monitor, which only takes about 2 minutes in windows) and of course the lack of good software.

What finally did me in was Lost season 3.  I stream the show via ABC's website, but their video player uses activeX controls.  I tried running Firefox via WINE in Ubuntu, but the FPS was horrible.  If my OS can't stream LOST than I don't want it.

edit add: As a person who also owns mac products, let me also say, screw the notion of apple superiority...

Norm, don't you know Apple's OSX is just a version of linux with a more fancy UI and better development tools?

Everything you can do on linux you can do on a Mac (from the command line anyways).

Oh, and setting up a Mac to run with your TV would take a total 2 seconds... Just plug in the cables.. and... done.

I had a feeling it wouldn't take Latro long to respond to an attack on apple superiority.

apple, unlike ms we remember our roots.  why develop when you can acquire?

i dont know what ubuntu you were using but my flavor has an nvidia or catalyst control panel so changing display options is a breeze.

so youre telling me i might as well get a mac to use as my firewall/webserver?  how quickly and easily can i make my mac work as a fully functional htpc with dvr capabilities that can stream live tv to any client box in the house/world?  osx may have the same father as linux, but its mother was a gold digging whore.

Actually OSX is based on the BSD kernel, not linux.  But this is just the kernel.  You're kind of implying that OSX is another *nix O/S which isn't really accurate.

But that isn't really my criticism of apple, a company I have bought computers from since my Apple //c back in the 80s.  Currently Apple has put all of their money into branding campaigns.  They overcharge for their computer hardware to make sheik stuff.  In terms of computing power to dollar ratio, PCs are still the best.  And of course, software limitations with apple and *nix boxes are a major reason not to go that route.  With the direction apple has gone I doubt if I'll buy one again.

There are a few good reasons to buy Mac of course.  If you are uncomfortable with Windows and/or are more comfortable with OSX then perhaps it is worth the extra money.  This is the main reason I have so many Macs, because my girlfriend grew up on Macs and doesn't buy anything else.

Another reason is sound engineering.  Since the hardware is more integrated than on a PC there is less electrical noise which some engineers are anal about -- although honestly I think this is a silly reason.

Invalid reasons for buying a Mac include, "they don't get viruses like PCs" (that's because they don't take up a large enough share of the computer market to make viruses viable), or my favorite "because I do a lot of graphic design".  While Adobe geared their products towards Apple in the 1990s, with the growth of Windows from 95 onward, Adobe now gears their software with windows in my first.  Adobe has come out and said that their software runs quicker and more efficiently in Windows than on Mac.

Not that I don't believe Adobe said that... but link please?

Reasons I own a Mac:

I get more down in less time when working on a Mac
Managing and Customizing their OS is easier
I lost the interest of building a computer to get those extra 15fps in the latest games
I play games less and less often
I prefer an OS with a command line that can actually do something
I really appreciate their engineering... I could never make a custom computer function as well and look as good.
I run a site about Macs
I find their User Interface to be designed for Users... instead of developers
I am working with individuals on developing software for the iPhone
and many other reasons....

While it is true that most of the reasons I own a Mac hold true to Ubuntu it just isn't 100% there yet for me.  And I run Ubuntu on a number of machines also.

And for setting up a Mac as a DVR, you just need to purchase elgato which provides the input for your cable and the software comes with it.  I haven't tried or seen anyone set it up to stream to other TVs in the house...

Also there is a number of Mac sites and groups that discuss turning the Mac into an HTPC... haven't tried it myself.

Here's a novel idea: people using what works for them without bashing the other available options.

Doubt it will ever happen as everyone I meet is guilty of it.
