Don't you love competition:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/157948/intel_cuts_quadcore_chip_prices_by_40_percent.html

The Q9650 on Newegg.com are now listed at about $350. This will bring down the price of everything else also.  I wouldn't be surprised to see the lower end quad cores going for under $100 in the next month or so.

One the AMD side of things, the Phenom 9600 is hovering around $100... so you could build a decent Quad-Core machine for $500.

$100 Phenom 9600
$100 790X Motherboard
$100 Radeon 4830
$50 OCZ 4GB RAM
$50 320GB Hard DRive
$20 DVD-RW Drive
$50 Case (Cooler Master Centurion/Antec 300)

32bit will only be able to recognize ~3gb RAM. A 64bit operating system will be able to recognize and utilize much more.

64bit XP can see more than ~3gb RAM.

at tax time, i get raped. i claim 1, but i usually owe. the only reason i'll get anything back this year is because i bought a house. weeeee $7500 (but is already spent on the couches, fridge, washer/dryer, etc)

but i just upgraded to the q9550 for free thanks to my boss at work (swapped him my q6600 straight across because it 9950 didn't work in his machine).

i need a new gfx card tho :S

and 64-bit xp is a joke.

Plan on installing Windows 7 64 bit - the beta that's out now is amazing.
