My summary of the situation:

AMD managed to come out on top, after who knows how many years of being the underdog, 2 years ago. They got lazy once they hit the top and Intel managed to retake the top of the hill. Currently, AMD is scrambling to do something to put them somewhere near the top again.

But this is coming from someone who doesn't have any real experience to be writing this summary and 100% of this is assumption/my opinion.

slightly innaccurate, but i appreciate the thinking.
the reason intel is doing well right now and atimd is hurting is because of one man: Intel CEO Paul Otellini (he's in my top 3 ceos). he recognized that ATI was ruling on intel in the enthusiast market, he also realized (this is about three or four years ago) that AMD was rocking better technology in some areas. in response, he 'overclocked' R&D. he pretty much leapfrogged an entire generation of processors to put out the core and core2. he also slashed chips prices for the core and core2 (while expensive, they are much more reasonable in comparison to their pricing strategy of old). investors were pissed, chopping the chip prices hurt intels late 05, 06 earnings badly. turned out to be a smart move, repositioning intel as the undisputed leader in microprocessors. the core2 is doing great!

that said, k10? imsof***ingthere.
my next build will probably happen near the end of summer. right now its looking like core2 e6300 and some fast ddr2. we'll see whats on the market when i actually do the build though.

i won this sweet watercooler at paglan last year, so i'm dying to put that thing into a new build.

AMD's plan to return to profitability:

Let us hope it works.  At least Intel hasn't given up innovating yet.  AMD is still enough competition for them.

I personally think that this is a shrewd move on AMD's part. They finally are realizing that they cannot compete directly with Intel. This unloading of their fab's will probably save money for the long run, because the increased costs of running a uber-cleanroom (Class 0.1 for those of you who know what that is) is completely expensive.

Plus their acquisition (and restoration) of ATi will be beneficial for defeating nVidia, because then you could theoretically place a GPU and a CPU on the same chip (even if its slightly larger). And since nVidia doesn't make CPU's yet, it will be wtfpwn.

Let's pray that AMD manages to become more of a threat. If it doesn't, we're all doomed to suffer Intel mediocrity... again.

Actually it will help them compete with Intel more directly.  :-/ By outsourcing the fabrication just like the other players it can now focus solely on designing a better processor.
