Hey guys, Im looking for a netbook for school. For those who don't know what a netbook is, its essentially a laptop, but alot more basic. Netbooks are usually below 2 pounds in weight (making them ideal for people on the go), and are tasked with the basic functions of word processing, and being able to access the internet. I need a keyboard that isn't cramped so I can type properly, and a netbook that has a long battery life for classes.
The Acer keyboard is too small, Im currently looking at the HP, the lenovo S10 isn't available in Canada (I called them, customer service wont deliver by polar bear), the new Dell Mini also looks cramped key wise. The Sony VAIO option seemed decent, if i wanted to drop $2799....athankyou but no..any suggestions/ experiences with netbooks would be much appreciated.

I would forgo the entire Netbook catagory, as they are woefully underpowered. Basically I can sum it up with two examples.
T400:
C2D P8400 (2.26Ghz)
14.1" WXGA+ (1440x900)
Radeon 3470 Graphics
80GB 5400rpm drive
CD-RW/DVD
Intel Wifi Link (AGN)
6 Cell battery
Total price $922.50
SL300
C2D T5670 (1.8ghz)
13.3 WXGA

2GB DDR2 RAM (1 DIMM)

9-Cell battery
$1013
These are two mini-notebooks, that are much much more powerful (due to the true C2D, the Discrete Graphics etc). They also have full length keyboards (sans numpad).

Interesting... to change the subject briefly, Ive never gamed on a laptop before, Ive always been a desktop fanboy, is is harder/ more difficult (this is assuming you have a mouse with the laptop as well), is it hard to change over? Also, further netbook suggestions appreciated. |

I've gamed on both and it honestly is like comparing a Diesel Truck to a Subcompact.
Both are vehicles, but they have a very different feel.
I didn't have too much trouble moving over, but I do prefer the desktop for gaming. I love laptops for writing, blogging, surfing the net, etc as I can move around with them and do stupid things while wasting my time.
Provided you have a mouse, the only odd thing is how the keyboard is in relation to the screen.

Ha very funny. I know what he is looking for, and supplied an alternative that won't be woefully underpowered with the same performance of my three year old Thinkpad T42 (Pentium M 1.6 > Atom 1.6). Plus the 9-cell battery included with the thinkpad will last as long (probably longer) than the standard 3 or 6 cell batteries on a Netbook. Gaming on a laptop has never been as good as a desktop, but it'll play older games well. |

A sweeping generalization with some truth behind it, but mostly wrong. Take a look at some of the notebooks out right now and for $2000+ you'll find the equivalent of a high-end PC, especially custom laptops. If you can find a good builder, you can get a PC which will play most current games fine. It will never have the same potential as a high-end desktop, but the extra power in a high-end desktop rarely comes into play earlier than 2 years after you buy it. |

But logical is somewhat right. See I just bought a new computer which is currently in the mail. This laptop is primarily for inclass use, so most important factors are ergonomic keyboard, and a long battery life so I can take down notes properly without being cut short on battery life (fighting over a spot next to a outlet is insane). |

Fair point. I'm with Logical when I would recommend a mini notebook or something other than a netbook. If you're looking for a laptop with good battery life and in class performance with gaming as an aside, then I recommend you check out http://www.xoticpc.com/ I'm not affiliated with them in any way or fashion and I don't' get anything for recommending them. I just bought a Force 3551 and B4L1STA just bought a Sager from them. They don't have the battery life you are looking for, but that wasn't our primary concern. They offer a wide range of laptops, and I know they do have laptops with up to 6 hours battery life. Check 'em out and I imagine if you post what you are looking for in their forum you will be spec'ed 3 or 4 laptops by forum members. |

Well I think we have the knowledge to spec a few laptops.  What would be a bit more helpful though is a list of what you want. I.e. Perfected size/weight of the laptop Price Graphics capability Battery Power (probably 6 or 9 cell depending on laptop) etc. It would make it a bit simpler. |
