I'm looking for a new laptop thats more compact and portable than my dell that I currently own...the most affordable and most compact I've seen so far is the Asus EEE

By the end of the year the Eee is suppose to have windows preinstalled as an option.  Installing windows on it is not very easy either and requires you to have some good knowledge or the ability to follow a tutorial well.  Of course it will come at a price too.  And if you don't need windows completely ignore this paragraph.

I would at least wait a few days and pick up the 8G for a few bucks more.  And pick it up fast.  This is Amazon.com's hottest selling electronic.  There is probably going to be some supply/demand issues the closer to Christmas you get.

Small, too small for my tastes.

If you're looking for an ultra portable laptop, this may work. I don't see it being practical for any real work applications, the specs for the 8G are decent for running an absolutely minimal setup that would do nothing but office and maybe browse the net. Other than that...

The thing is actually very incredible for all normal day to day activities.  The custom Linux operating system it has installed is very light weight and performs extremely well.  In addition you can unlock the basic OS to give you a complete Linux setup minus a few terminal commands.

And the 8G will extend it's multitasking capability a bit further and primarily add some much needed space.  The screen's resolution is it's primary drawback, but since it supports an external monitor this is largely a moot point.

I would highly recommend it to anyone doesn't need it for advanced programs or Windows.  As it is very capable at speedily handling it's intended tasks.
