i just ordered a new pc from newegg

i got

intel e8400
Samsung 2253BW 22" lcd
Sapphire 4850
Xigmatek HDTSD964 rifle cooler
Asus p5q pro mobo
Antec Tp3-650 powersupply
Antec Three Hundred case
4gigs of OCZ Reaper 1066
750 gig seagate
22x dvd burner

came out to 1200 with everything.
i probably could have cut a lot more corners and saved some money but i think i did pretty well.
it should be pretty future proof- it'd be very easy to swap in a quad core if an application utilized it, right now i dont really run anything optimized for more than two cores.
i can just drop in another 4850 and almost double my 3dmark vantage scores or add more ram, hdds as needed.

what do you guys think, is this awesome y/n?

Not awesome. Since Nehalem (i7) is just around the corner you will have to get a new motherboard, cpu and ram (DDR3) when you have to upgrade next.

Not to mention i7 is about 1.2-1.5 times faster at the same speed.

Never trust prerelease benchmarks.  They are generally directly promoted by the company that benefits them and designed to induce hype.

Yeah but these benchmarks are from Andantech and TomsHardware, which are two of the most well known tech review sites out there. So I would say that they are accurate, if not slower then what the final stepping will be.

That's what I looked at earlier.  Toms hasn't been able to really review it yet, and anandtech's reviews are not only preliminary but also uncertain.  Let us wait and see instead of getting our hopes up.

Nice build. I'm never been a big fan of Asus, but I build quite a few rigs with them. Rock solid boards, for sure.

Everything else looks rock solid. Did you do 2x2GB or 4x1GB for the ram?

Also, logical, early adopting is a habit I gave up on after using eVgas swap program for my 7950GX2 and trying XP64bit. Fast when they worked, but man were they pretty crappy. Not to mention both companies basically gave up on them in a few months. Besides, the advent of new technology usually drives prices down.

Well early adopting isn't bad, you just have to know what to choose. With your choices I would have given up early adopting too. Tongue

Although it looks like with the initial revision of the i7, they will still have a Northbridge chipset, while later ones won't. Then again they wouldn't call it the bleeding edge if it didn't hurt the pocketbook.  Afro
