With the GTX 280 for NVIDIA being an all around disappointment as it is fairly similar in performance to SLI 9800s, and ATI stating that the 4850 is still a competitor, as it currently stands, Im interested to get everyone's opinions.

I'm now under the belief that if you're running AMD, try out ATI.. If you don't like it go back.

Intel = NVIDIA.

Although, I do run an ATI Card with my Intel...

I don't think it matters what chipset you're using.  Just go with the card that has the highest benchies unless you';re on a budget.  Then find a card that's a good deal for it's performance.

Intel = ATi.
That's how it currently stands, although the new x58 (i7) chipset will be compatible with both SLI and Crossfire.

Video card competition = consumer FTW.  The 48XX cards are good, as are the NVidia offerings.  Don't overthink this one - you won't go wrong either way.  I keep going NVidia, mostly because they tend to run cooler and suck less power than a comparable AMD card.  If that changes I'll be happy to slap a Radeon in my rig.

Don't call me a fanboy - the single biggest quantum leap I ever had was when I bought my Radeon 9700 Pro.

I have owned 2 ati cards and had plenty of driver issues with both.  It will probably be a while before I give them another shot.  But if nVidia continues to use faulty components that mean I'm going to have to RMA more often...

I've used both, loved both, and hated both.

Until nVidia/Intel and AMD/ATI get further into bed with each other, benchmarks > brand buying.

Interesting...what card are you currently running, and what processor?

Old School

AMD X2 4800
and
eVga 7950 GX2

In the systems I've built recently, mostly budget gaming systems, I've been putting in an Intel 8400 and either a 8800GT or HD4850

And I have ran a super old school ATi card that was big news. Can't remember the name, it came out at the same time as the 3rd gen iPods. So... 5-6 years ago.

Just ordered a radeon 4850 for 139.99 bucks (after rebate.) and hoping for the best Smiley (custom cooler too!)

Historically I've owned:
Voodoo 3 pci - Built a 2nd diablo 2 machine back in the days
TNT 2 8mb - awesome, needed for quake 3
Radeon 8500 - eh...
Geforce 4mx - awesome, ran GTA III. Did die though, think twice before you buy from MSI (I had issues also with their laptop hinges)
Mobility Radeon 9600 - died when overclocking to run oblivion better...
Mobility Radeon x1600 - refuses to die no matter how I overclock it...
Geforce 8600m gt - Quite disappointed in its performance...the 8600gt/gts was shit...
Geforce 7900gs - This card was the sickest, to this day that 120 dollar spent still runs hella games(oblivion 1440x900 nicely) (and probably will in the future if I don't sell it to someone)
...
Radeon 4850 - hopefully my ati-tray-tools will make friends with this so I don't have to deal with CCC (Communistic Crap Center) I felt that ATI may be slightly better here with this card (vs. 9800gt) just reading some of the benchies. Plus I have a mATX case, and previously my 7900gs is pushing it right up the floppy drive encasing, thus anything bigger = libtech fubar. This PaLit card I bought is physically shorter than the 7900gs due to its redesigned 4850 PCB Cheesy.

I say both are good companies, but the last generation or so NVIDIA sucked ass by trying to trick [foolish] people into buying rebranded products (8800gt 9800gt anyone? we are talking about nil' performance increase in generation change on this card.) So I'm going with ATI for this round, but good luck trying to brand me a fanboi Cheesy.

Could it have been the legendary ATI radeon 9700pro (which brought the 256bit mem. bus to buy-able prices) or the 9800pro?
