Well I bought this processor the other day, but it looks like the stock cooling is a big sissy.  What options are there for a different heatsink/fan (preferably something not expensive)? Or will I that bad off with sticking with the stock stuff? I also don't plan on overclocking it anytime soon.

Zalman FTW!

Keeps my OC'd e4600ES nice and cool (31-35 Idle and 45-50 Full load for an hour or so.) Then again my room is above average in temp usually (80-85). But in the winter those temps go down 5-10C.

I've been wondering this too as my new cpu seems to be running hotter than I expected and I was hoping to oc it atleast a little.

Those zalman's are noisier than jet engines on full speed.

If you're not OC'ing, then those skyscraper heatsinks should work fine for what you're doing. Plus, they're usually fanless and if you put a fan on them, they tend to be 120mm to make things nice and quiet.

Yeah.  Zalman is pretty highly regarded for their silence.

I've used two of their heatsinks in systems I've built and both of them have driven me up the wall. Both were that 'onion' design and both were noisy.

Granted, this was about 2 years back, so maybe things have changed. I just avoid them on principle.

Hmmm I got mine about two years ago. Maybe you forgot to set your mobo to automatically control the fan speed. Although even on highest it doesn't add any noise to my system.

No, I intentionally did not let my mobo control my fan speed.

Sorry, I'm OCD about my temps/OC'ing and mobo controlled fans just bother me.

I'm with laby on temps.  I've seen terminator, give the machines control of your fans and next thing you know they're drinking your beers and stealing your women.

lol, so I finally went to some of your links and that is the same processor I got Powdered and until I put fans on every bit of my case the stock cooler was hitting way high warning temps when playing games.  I looked around and found that some people seem to believe that this cpu gives various boards improper temp readings, but I'd rather err on the side of cooling the thing to hell than just assuming it is an incorrect temp.
