k, i just got interested in doing photoshop for the first time. my first project is to make a background image for my desktop. i want to take this 800 x 600 image and place it in center of a black background.
i've been messing with this for half an hour and no luck. i get confused trying to work with the layers stuff, but dam, just frustrating me.
can someone give me links to very good online tutorials??

so you're saying you want a 1280x1024 (or so) background with an 800x600 picture in the middle surrounded by black?
Open image. Change background color to black (click the little double arrow between the two color boxes on the toolbar) Image -> Canvas Size Change Inches to Pixels Put 1280 in the first box Put 1024 in the second box Click ok Save

Haha. You can do that in MSPaint. Don't confuse yourself with photoshop.

Actually, you could just change your background on your desktop to black then change the desktop picture position to center instead of tile or stretch.

Sir photoshop is a confusing program, especially if you've never used a similar program before (paint doesn't count). I would recommend going in and starting out with simple things, try a little bit with each of the tools. Figure out how to add a bevel and a drop shadow. Primarily what you'll want to do is click EVERYTHING and see what it does. If you find it doesn't change any you may want to try changing your selected colors.
Once you have done that, come up with something you want to do. For example a fire background or Gold lettering in a realistic manner. Search in Google "Photoshop Tutorial Realistic Fire" or something similar. Click on a few links til you find what you wanted, than follow the tutorial. But do this after you have already skrewed around with the program a bit and figured out the basics.
I am a new user to photoshop, only used it for 9 months now. I know the program well enough to get most everythign done with it, but I still have a great deal to learn. The more you use the program, the more you discover the hidden features and KrAzY stuff.
