Can't believe this doesn't already exist.
Anyone else here a Metallica fan? What did you think?
I'll post a short writeup on the Guitar Hero III lossless rip. I HATED the official version. Whoever brickwalled that thing should be murdered. For those who don't know
http://www.nme.com/news/metallica/39816 the official album was compressed for loudness so much that there is EXTREMELY noticeable clipping.
Anywho, on to the review. (Disclaimer: It's entirely subjective. I will not try at all to make this valid in the least. ;P)
First half of the CD - AWESOME! By far the best half of a CD since TBA. Too bad things go downhill after that...That Was Just Your Life - Great Opening. Catchy, powerful, and horrifically full of energy. Love it. Def gives the album some hope.
End of the Line - Continues the great mood established by the first song. Relatively catchy, very powerful, and very strong. A bit more instrumental. Some awesome shredding going on with the solos.
Broken, Beat, and Scarred - Gets a bit heavier, punchier, and packs a wallop. Song picks up energy towards the end and leaves you wanting to punt a midget or something.
The Day that Never Comes - Slower, more melodic, still enjoyable. After the first 3 songs, it's a welcome break. Awesome solos, awesome vocals, and decent instrumental side. I really think vocals carries this song.
All Nightmare Long - BAM! We're back to hard as hell. THIS SONG ROCKS!
Hard This is what I want and expect from Metallica. Pure awesomeness in instrumental form. Solos also kick some serious trash.
Second half of the CD - Mainly. Bleh. Not worth the listen.Cyanide - WTF is this? It's not bad, but it's definitely not good. Gives me bad memories of St. Anger. More nasal, lacking direction, not really hard or soft. A misguided, misdirected song.
Unforgiven III - Sorry if you like this. I don't mind it. It's largley mediocre. It's just too sappy. Way too sappy. It's like a whine and moan fest encapsulated in music.
Judas Kiss - You either love or hate this song. I hate it. Some people call this the best Metallica song ever. BAH! How? It's hard, but it's missing the cohesion and awesomeness of the first half of the CD. Feels like it was made to be way too catchy. Bearable, but that's about it.
The end of the CD - BOO YA!My Apocalypse - Oh my lord, this song is haRd. Yes, with a capital R. I still like All Nightmare Long better, but this song is so fast, raw, strong, and packs such a wallop it leaves you gasping for air as you are shredded into oblivion. Submit to the awesome solos, vocals, and raw energy. Resistance is futile.
Suicide and Redemption - Great way to end the CD. I'm not too big on instrumental tracks, especially Metallica instrumental tracks. This song proves surprisingly enjoyable. The riffs and solos in this song are par none. Definitely a huge leap from previous efforts.
To summarise the whole thing: It was a much welcome break from Metallica's mediocrity through most of the 90's. One of the first whole albums which I can say I generally like besides The Black Album.
