What does everyone else think of this album?
I've made it through this album twice, so I decided to write something up on it.
Summary for the ADD: First few songs were okay and the rest became repetitive, whiny, and boring. An album which reaches for the heights of greatness but falls short. Rating: 5.2/10 Recommended: No. Go pick out a few of your favorite tracks, that's about it. What I like: Tribal, minimalist beats which were refreshing in light of modern music. Autotune was fun. What I did not like: Repetitive. All of the above was abused and overused. 'Heartbreak' theme was whiny, childish, immature, and passive aggressive. With an album theme of 'heartbreak' and tribal beats, you think the album would capture the raw emotion and essence of 'heartbreak.' Yeah, that didn't happen. A more appropriate title would be 'Passive aggressive hate towards my ex who I can't get over'
Review: I've gotta give this album credit because it's fairly decent, but it's not by any means good. Before I start railing on it, yes I understand this is supposed to be different, West doing his own thing, getting back to tribal roots, doing minimalist hip hop with the 808 drum machine, etc. I'll give him credit for that - he did something different. Different doesn't mean good, though. What West made really isn't all that great.
CD Overview First few tracks: After popping in the CD for a listening, I was taken back by sound of the album. It was minimalist, it was different, it was kinda nice in comparison to what I have heard recently. More or less, the CD was refreshing in the beginning.
Few more tracks in: I began to despise the auto-tune which West was using. While it is a novel idea, it was getting old really quick. It felt fake and shallow. There was no room for West's vocal talent (ha!) to shine through.
After the middle mark: The album does not mix things up at all. The first few tracks with their minimalist beats, minimalist lyrics, and minimalist everything were neat because it was new. After I've heard that for several tracks, it gets really old.
By the end: Dear god, let it end. I had to skip half of the last track, I couldn't stand it anymore. It was too repetitive. The beats, the vocals, the lyrics, the theme, and the autotune, they all had worn out their welcome a long time ago, yet they did not stop.
