Actually, if you did the whole album thing AND a tour.. you'll make a lot more money doing shows than selling CDs.  Just share your music with everyone to get them to pay to come to a show, and maybe buy a t-shirt.

Doesn't the majority of money made by bands come from the tour and merchandise rather than the CD?

I'm not sure, but I know a hell of a lot of the ticket price goes to the venue.

Absolutely.  For an $18-20 CD, the band will usually only get $1-$2 of that.

Ok, well for those artists that make platinum albums thats $1 - $2 Million from record sales... So I wouldn't say that they don't feel every record sale is important...

And that's just when they sell them in the US.  Since many artists sell records world wide..  I wouldn't classify their album sales as insignificant.

Check out some interesting numbers on the difference between CD sales and individual track downloads.

Either way, if you like someone's music enough after you DL it, it's only far to cough up some money (either by buying the CD, or some other source) to help them reach their Million Dollar Dreams.

This article also says that CD sales are a major contributor to an artist's income, but they also mention how free music may start to be used to drive Concerts attendence.  I always thought the concerts where part of the effort to get you to buy their cds though.....

Anyways, it looks like we need to hear some of Powdered! and Big Rig's bands music so we can help spread it across the face of the internet and they can make money from concerts... And maybe a few legal DL here and there.

My philosophy is "Pay for it if I have the money".

Still, compared to what their company is making off of them, they are getting ripped off.
