Since all you west coasters are still sleeping...

EMI announced they'll be selling their tracks on iTunes DRM Free with superior quality sound for $1.29 a track.

Now, if the the RIAA will follow the lead of the largest independent music company in the world we'll be set.

I'm saying they'll be the first to stop making music because people that like them, You for example, don't buy music you just pirate it so they'll have no reason to continue making it.

I'm not saying that there isn't a time for pirating... I just think that if you like something pay for it.  If I DL a movie, and I Like it, I go buy it to support it so more movies like it will be made.

As for .30 extra to for the no DRM is bogus IMHO. It took about 5 minutes to burn your iTunes music to a CD, and then re-rip it, which effectively removes the DRM. Considering iTunes only sells at 128kb/s, the quality loss is undetectable. Music already sounds like you're listening to it underwater at 128...

As for the higher quality, it may be worth the extra .30 if they bumped it to 240. I still wouldn't pay an extra .30 for 192.

The higher quality songs will be encoded at 256kbs according to Businessweek.

I'll do this for movies, absolutely.  But there's no way I'll do this for music.  If bands want to put together a whole CD of great music, I'll buy their album.  Too many bands are getting away with putting out 1-2 good tracks, and I'm forced to pay $15 for the rest of the album full of crap?  Either that or I can buy a completely crippled version of the song.  Or I can pirate it.

It's not even a question for me.  This is why I like allofmp3.com.  I'll even pay a little bit more and buy the music from sites with no DRM.

So what you're saying is... If iTunes had no DRM you'd use it to buy individual tracks you liked?Huh

Cause thats what I do... but I don't mind a little DRM here and there, as I only use it on my computers and on my ipod.. and If I want it someplace else I'm ripping it to DVD in the first place.

Praise the lord!!!!

If iTunes did not have DRM and was at 256kb/s, I would definitely use it. However, I'm not paying $1/track for subpar, over-protected music.

I would almost guarantee that the reason that they are charging .30 more for the DRM free tracks is because EMI forced them to. They've been trying to up the prices on iTunes for quite a while now, so this is probably their compromise.

Screw EMI and screw the RIAA.
