Abuya?!?

« on: February 17, 2007, 07:03:05 PM »

Ok, this is a boring and not so fun story.

Anywho, this Friday I woke up around 6:00 AM and head off to school. Things seem to be going great until I return sometime that afternoon when I find the house in a complete mess and bits of servers everywhere. I figure that somebody is just having fun with linux boxes which were in storage in my basement, so I go about business as usual. I log on and notice I'm disconnected from the oPg mIRC channel; accordingy, I try to reconnect. Nothing. I figure that mIRC is just having a fit so I open a browser. Still nothing. Now I open CMD prompt trying to ping something, nothing.

To make a long story short, nothing worked yet it looked like I was recieving a signal from the outside world.

I eventually figure out that around 7:00 AM that morning my ISP sent an email to inform us that they were going to be shutting down next week and that we may want to move to a different company. We figure it is nothing immediate so we don't act on it.

Well... around 12:00 Noon all of a sudden hosting for the avalanche.org box down at aros.net went down. We try to contact aros.net through any means possible but we don't get through. So, my padre drove down to aros.net to realize that there was no one there. This didn't go over too well considering we have a full 4u rackmount in there which we need hosted for the weekend. Accordingly, my padre bangs on the door until someone lets him in and get his server.

Next step, xmission.

So to condense this even further, while at xmission getting the servers hosted the phones start ringing off the hook. Apparently aros.net decided to pull the plug on their DSL as well as their hosting a week earlier than the email said. Thus the padre gets the exact same plan through qwest set up with xmission. All we need to do is call qwest and have them push a few buttons.

Well, we call qwest and they tell us that it is going to be until next wednesday until they can push those 9 buttons. No one needs to come out, no one needs to leave the office, but due to the "corporate que" they can't push the necessary buttons until next wednesday.

What does this mean to you? Well, not much unless you were anxiously awaiting the server rules or are on the CAL team.

I'll be back next wednesday if qwest doesn't pull something else our of their posterior.

With love,
Laby

Back up/Mirror servers to only be used in emergencies.

avalanche.org is a major recorder of snow condition data for several avalanche centers across the united states. My father is responsible for keeping the site online. Accordingly, we have a few servers in my basement to be run off my home connection in case the colocated box ever goes down.
