What exactly is your definition of outdated? Cause I'd say it's outdated. Maybe not the gameplay, but the graphics, and parts of the engine (features, scrolling, crap like that) sure are.
edit: Graphic overhaul and convenience features are mostly what I'm talking about.

I'd agree that it does leave the latest in RTS features to be desired. Also who can argue that the graphics aren't out-dated, 800X600 only anyone?
But the fact that StarCraft lacks the AI (both offensive and orders given to your men) and many useful online features, is also what makes it an awesome strategy game. You have to often times do more. The thing I also loved about StarCraft was the choice between macro and micro, neither was a better strategy than the other, they both worked well. Personally I am a major micromanager, I know exactly how long it takes for x amount of men to kill unit x, and during the time it takes for the killing missile to travel to it's target I've already told my men to attack the next target. That's an example of my micromanaging. But, some of the people I've seen play professionally use macro only. Others use Micro.
I would have to say Laby, that as with all strategy games it takes forever to get to know them. And that if you got to know SC as well as you know WC3, you'd probably be just as or more pleased with it.

warcraft 3 isn't even a true rts. it's like 2 parts warcraft 2, 1 part diablo 2. no thanks.
and i don't know if you've played starcraft lately but the new patch on a nonmoney map makes the comps intense. taking advantage of all the upgrades and abilities. so yeah best rts = starcraft.
graphics<gameplay.
also, wow is stupid. think about it.

That's what makes it amazing for me. Because I have to be taking 1-2 heros out and leveling them for their abilities against creeps with a few units while making sure no units die, and I'm leveling as fast as I can while building an army and a base. That blend IMHO made the game a much greater challenge than most other RTS games, and much more fun.

Has anyone toyed around with the advanced AI for StarCraft?
I have learned the normal AI like clockwork & it is really boring anymore. I can predict attacks a long time in advance. Except when I created the subordinate AI, that was kewl.

Ummm...
If you're referring to artificial intelligence then the best cure for that is a human player...
The hardest computer player in any blizzard game is usually 5x worse than the average human player.

Heh, yes I'm referring to that. But no internet on Jed's computer for years = Jed have to play with AI.
You can find some perty kicking AI's now, but they are certainly no match for a human. However they do have their uses. Plus when I play StarCraft in one of my LAN gatherings we fill up the empty slots with AIs.

What do you mean by toying with the AI?
Yea...AI is horrible. Why fill up empty slots with AI?

Played against it.
I add and remove AIs to balance the game out. The skill sets of my friends varies greatly, and sometimes no matter how you do the teams it is very lob sided. That's where AIs come in.
