Anyone else disappointed by the Length of the Main Quest and the @#%@#$%#$ fact that once you beat it the game doesn't continue with your character. AKA It ENDS abruptly. (please don't misquote me, I didn't say the GAME was short)
***SPOILER ALERT*** OMFG ****
The first half of the main quest (picking up clues, finding out that you were born outside of vault 101, etc...) was compelling. But right when you find the GECK, the game kind of rushes you to the end. I know for a fact that oblivion's main quest takes at least twice the time and effort in comparison to fallout 3's.
Also the ending doesn't make any sense. I had Fawkes with me (who is a metahuman/mutant = immune to radiation,) but it was either I or that Lyon chick that had to enter the radiation filled purifier chamber. If this game really wanted to have true multiple endings (instead of 200 bs permutations,) then I should have been able to sent Fawkes in (He's an optional companion.) I rescued Fawkes on my way to the GECK, which involved a choice, which in turn could have been used to influence the ending (ie NO ONE DIES.)
And I swear there could have been a more compelling end goal than activating some crappy water purifier....
I think overall the main quest was like 6 or 7 missions long? It sure felt like that...
***END SPOILER ALERT*** Lib=AWESOME for putting up spoiler alerts****
So I kind of had an inkling before the last mission, that it WAS GOING TO BE the last mission. I reloaded a savefile made before I committed to the mission and now I'm doing a bunch more side quests. I've put 30 hours into this game (done a bunch of cool/long side quests already, like Moira's Survival Guide, Reilly Rangers,) but I felt cheated of substance. The presentation was better than oblivion, but quantity is always important in these types of RPG's, and even if backstories are lacking our minds can fill in the blanks with our imagination.
I'm sure I'm just one of the few that feels this way, and I will grind further in the game. But I felt a little cheated with Fallout 3 (expecting the epic scale of oblivion,) and what is up with not releasing the construction kit!? I wouldn't be playing oblivion without the user-made mods, and to this day I still play the game thanks to community mods. If mod dev. for fallout 3 doesn't begin soon, I fear that I will quickly lose interest.
Oh, just be remember to make a separate savefile before the ending, as fallout 3 is NOT LIKE oblivion where you can keep playing after the main quest.
