I believe Casey's config will help you get higher FPS.

Google for it.

I had a 7950 and I got 125 with full settings, 1gb ram and a 3000+ athlon.  Unless your computer looks at free prawn all the time there is no way you get bad FPS.

Seriously?  I have a 7900 gt (volt modded to allow higher overclocking (640/1700)), 2 GB RAM, and an AMD 3700+ San Diego core.  I play at 1280x1024 at full settings, full AA, everything except the dynamic lighting, or whatever it's called.  And I rarely go under 100+ fps.  Sometimes on inferno, but that's to be expected.

Do you mod you config at all to get better fps or is that just a normal config? I gotta beast for a computer ( radeon x1900 XTX, 4GB RAM, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual core 2ghz) and still get 60-100 fps at times (fps_max 101)

edit:
I play at 1600x1200 with everything turned up to the highest settings.

My computer had a normal config except all the graphics settings were maxed.  It was crappy, and I never dropped below 80.

BTW 125 was my average FPS, not a max.  I could crank out 180 with the 7950.  And it is not that much nicer then the 7900.

Attention everyone

GPU in CSS means very, very little. The engine is HEAVILY CPU dependent. Which is why my FPS shot from 179 on the stress test to 209 when I OC'ed .3 ghz on my old processor.

Similarly, when I upgraded my GPU from a 7800 GTX to a 7950 GX2 (yay stepup, eVga paid me to upgrade) I saw minimal FPS increase.

There are a few articles on the subject somewhere by people who have the motivation to write lengthy articles on the Source engine.

yeah, i am playing on the same video card i was playing on with a old amd3000 at 2.4 getting around 75 to 90 fps average (stress test did 112) and now with a dual core macheen at 3.49 i get extremely high fps. stress test did just shy of 100 frames more. at 207
also if you havent allocated your mem do so. its something like heapsize or something. i cant remember though.

Quote
-heapsize: Dedicates a specific amount of memory to Source.

Increasing the allotted memory can yield substantial performance gains. However, it is important that you dedicate the right amount of memory. Dedicating too much or too little could actually cause a performance decrease.
It is recommended you dedicate half of your system memory. Below is the recommended usage:

    * 512MB System Memory: -heapsize 262144
    * 1GB System Memory: -heapsize 524288
    * 2GB System Memory: -heapsize 1048576

As for FPS configs. Here are two (I neither use nor condone the use of these, however they are both CAL legal)

The other config (DT's config) is attached. There are two versions: one for AMD, one for Intel, make sure you get the right one.

This is with the default config that ships with the game.  Oh, and my CPU is overclocked to 2.4 GHz.

Like laby said though, I had a POS P4 3.2 GHz hyper threading CPU with the 7900 and I was barely breaking 80 fps on the stress test.  Upgraded to AMD, and now the stress test usually does 170+.

I think I must have had the god of all 3000+ cpus. When I switched from a 6800 to a 7950 my FPS went from an in-game verage of 40 to an average of 125.  And I was zealous about watching it.

Then when I switched from a 7950 over to a Dual core 6000+ with an OC'd 8800 GTS 640mb, I stayed the same in CSS performance.  The only difference was an increase in Resolution, from 1280x1024 to 1680x1050, and I might have added a second monitor during the switch.

To be honest, from my experience with this computer and another one of similar specs that I played on for half a year, the graphics card is everything in CSS (although Laby does know way more than I on this topic, this is just supposition based on experience).  However, I typically run an extremely minimal CPU intensive Windows, no AV and absolutely no additional background programs that aren't necessary for a stable system.  I also stick to the rule that if Windows has it integrated, don't install software that came with the hardware unless necessary.

I'm sure Buds problem is his front side bus.  While your processor speed is the most important, it can only work as fast as it gets information.

Whats your FSB clock speeds? Also, the available cache on your processor will help.
